The Story
The Heritage and Innovation of Kedai Kopi Yee Kee
The story of Kedai Kopi Yee Kee began in the 1940s in a small village in Zhaoqing, Guangdong, China. The founder, Mr. Chen Yi, was originally a highly skilled chef. However, fate brought him south to Kuala Kubu Bharu, Selangor, Malaysia, where he worked as the head cook at a mining site, preparing daily meals for hardworking miners. Under the hot sun, he used his cooking skills to bring comfort and satisfaction to these laborers during their demanding days. In 1948, Mr. Chen Yi decided to leave the mining camp life and started a small coffee stall along Jalan Macalister in Kuala Kubu Bharu. Although the stall was simple and built only with zinc sheets, his passion and culinary talent brought life to the small shop. He sold Cantonese desserts and traditional pastries such as lotus seed sweet soup, ginkgo sweet soup, egg tea, youtiao (fried dough sticks), ham chim peng (salty fried pancake), sugar-coated dough fritters, and smiley sesame biscuits. These treats quickly gained popularity among the local community.
